“神童”
杨红旗是全国珠心算大师赵怀纲的“得意门生”。1999年6月18日，她不用任何工具，只用心算，算出了6位数平方根的前16位数，所用时间为42秒，创下了大世界吉尼斯之最。于是，当年仅10岁的杨红旗被中国人民解放军经济学院特招，成为目前中国年龄最小的女兵。
赵怀纲的另一个学习珠心算的学生曾在学校的语文课上被老师当场批评过。当时，老师让学生们自己读课文，这个学生把书翻得很快。老师说：“你这是翻着玩儿呀？”学生很委屈地说：“老师，我都看了。”“这么快你能看过来？你看哪位同学像你这样翻？”为了证明自己，这个学生复述了课文的内容。老师很惊讶：“你咋能看得这么快？”“我学过珠心算。”
其实，学习珠心算受益的人远不止杨红旗等几个人。赵怀纲自1990年退休到2001年，他一人就已教了近万名学生。实际上，大部学习珠心算的学生的普遍特点是“快”：听、读、写和记忆能力超出一般学生，尤其在数学、语文和外语学习中表现出很大优势。他们一般能用脑算多位数加减乘除和开方，有些题大学生都难住了，而他们张嘴就来。河北师大附小11岁的小学生李明阳不用任何计算工具，仅用37.9秒就用心算开出了一个6位数的平方，而且正确率开到19位数，刷新了世界纪录和吉尼斯“一心三用”的纪录；他还同时完成了每道25个3位数的3道算术题的计算，仅用了22.97秒。与前世界纪录相比，每道题不仅多了5个数，而且还少用了26秒。另外，还有的学生在默读一遍后，他们就能把课文全背出来……因此，他们常常被人们称为“神童”或“超人”。其实，这些“神童”就是一些10岁左右的孩子，他们具有杰出的天赋并接受过名为“珠心算”的特殊教育。
Children Prodigies
Yang Hongqi is Zhao Huaigang’s favorite pupil. Zhao is an expert on mental arithmetic in China. He can do calculating in mind very fast by using the principles in Chinese abacus calculation. On June 18, 1999, Yang Hongqi, a girl of 10 years old, extracted the root of a 6 digits number and reached a correct answer of 16 digits in 42 seconds by the mental arithmetic. She set a record of the Great Guinness World. Then she was enrolled in the PLA Economic College and became the youngest female soldier in China at present.
One day, the teacher of a school told his pupils to read the texts by themselves. A pupil, who was one of Zhao’s pupils in mental arithmetic class, looked over his book quickly. “Do you look it for fun?” asked the teacher. “I have read it well, teacher!” “Can you learn so quickly all these texts by your heart?” In order to prove himself, the pupil repeated the texts face to face. “How can you read and remember them so quickly?” asked the teacher surprisingly. “I have had a class on mental arithmetic.”
In fact, not only little pupils like Yang Hongqi and so on have benefited from the mental arithmetic, but many people have benefited. Zhao Huaigang has taught about ten thousands people from 1990 to 2001. Actually, all children pupils who received this education have a common feature in their study——fast in their speed of learning: their abilities to listen, read, write and memorize are far better than the ordinary pupils, especially in learning arithmetic, Chinese and foreign languages. Most of them can perform arithmetical calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of multi-digits numbers and extract very quickly the square root by the mental arithmetic. Some arithmetic problems put the university students on the spot, but they can tell the correct answers in the twinkling of an eye. For example, 11-year-old Li Mingyang, who is a pupil of the Primary School Affiliated to the Hebei Teacher’s University, extracted the square root of 6-digit number in 37.9 seconds and reached a correct answer of 19-digit number by the mental arithmetic without using any stationery tools. He broke the record of the world. And he also broke other Guinness World Record for he could handle 3 affairs at the same time——He completed in 22.97 seconds the calculations of 3 arithmetic problems in which every formula has 25 3-digit numbers. Each formula of these problems not only has 5 more numbers but the time by mental arithmetic is also 26 seconds less than the former world record. In addition, some pupils can recite the texts after reading them once. They set or improved the world records. Therefore, many people often call these children “Children Prodigies” or “Supernatural Brains’’. These Children Prodigies are nothing but some 10-year-old or so children who have preeminent natural gifts and received a special training on mental arithmetic.
四条腿的婴儿
2002年1月5日，广西医科大学第一附属医院为一名出生仅2天的男婴成功地施行了连体分割手术，术后婴儿状况良好。
这名男婴属于发生概率为20万分之一的伴脐膨出型不对称连体婴儿，极为罕见。寄生胎仅有臀部和双腿，在男婴胸部通过软组织相连。男婴腹部肌肉缺损，仅有一层薄薄的腹膜覆盖内脏。
主持这次手术的教授说，单卵双胎分离不全，胚胎细胞分裂时缺氧、低温或受到某种有害物质侵袭，都有可能导致连体畸形。妊娠的前三个月是胎儿致畸的高危期，孕妇应注意远离辐射等危险源，并要注意冬季保暖和不要过度劳累。一旦发现婴儿畸形，越早矫治越好。
4-legged Baby
On January 5, 2002, the No. 1 Hospital Attached to Guangxi Medical University of China performed a surgical operation successfully on a 4-legged deformed baby boy born two days ago.
The boy belongs to so-called deformational Siamese twins of nonsymmetrical accompanying umbilical cord and the case is very rare. The rate to bear such a baby is only one out of 0.2 million. On the baby’s chest there is a parasitic fetus that has only two buttocks and two legs. Its chest joins the parasitic fetus by soft tissue. There is a hole on the boy’s abdomen; his internal organs are covered by a thin layer of membrane of abdomen.
The professor in charge of the operation said: This is because the two embryos of one ovum separated not completely. When the cells of embryo divide, owing to the lack of oxygen, or being affected with a cold or attacked by some harmful matters, they may have the chance to be Siamese twins and deformation of fetus. For this reason, the first 3 months of pregnancy is the period of extraordinary danger to cause malformed fetus. Pregnant woman should pay great attention to keep away from radiation and other source of pollution, keep warm in winter and be sure not to overwork. Once the malformed baby is found, measures should be taken in time, the earlier the better.
